Ward Allen, whose real name was Warden Ambrose, grew up
in a family of fiddle players. At four years of age, he played piano in
the family home. By the time he was twelve, he and his brother played
fiddle as a duo at barn dances.
In his hometown of Kirkton, Ontario he won many
contests, and in 1953 became Canada's Old-Time Fiddling Champion. That
same year, he was chosen to represent Canada in the International Fiddling
Contest at the Louisville Sate Fair in Louisville, Kentucky.
During the 1950s and 1960s he recorded for Sparton
Records. His best known song was Maple Sugar in 1957, which also became
popular in the US.
He died on August 3, 1965
