Born in Windsor, Ontario, and raised in Timmins, Ontario
by an Ojibway father and Canadian mother, Shania was ten years old when
her mother brought her to local clubs and restaurants to sing. After high
school, Shania left home to pursue music fulltime.
When she was 21 years old, her parents were killed in
car accident, and she had to look after her younger brothers and
sister. To make ends meet she worked as the headline vocalist at the
Deer Hurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario. Mary Bailey later became
her manager when she decided on a career in country music.
Shania's self-titled debut album on Polygram Records
came out in 1993. 2 years later, her second, The Woman in Me, was
released. It contained the smash hits, Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been
Under, and Any Man Of Mine. The latter became her first number one hit on
the Billboard Country Singles Chart in 1995. She became the third Canadian
country artist in forty-five years to have a number one hit single in the
US. ( The other two are Hank Snow and Anne
Murray)
