Anne Murray
| Anne Murray was Canada's first international female singing
star. Since 1970 she has sold over 22 million albums, earned four Grammys,
and almost 30 Junos. The Canadian Recording Industry Association
honored her as the Female Recording Artist of the Decade in 1980. In
addition to her numerous awards in both the pop and country fields, her
1988 CBC-TV Christmas Special was the most widely viewed program of the
decade. Capitol Records released her 30th album in September of
1991, and early in 1992 a greatest hits album came out.
The story of Anne Murray's rise to the top of the music charts began in
Springhill, Nova Scotia, where her parents had her take piano and vocal
lessons. Born Morna Anne Murray on June 20, 1945, she made her first TV
appearance on Mocton's CKCW-TV's Supper Club, where she sang Moon River.
Her first professional audition was in 1964 for the CBC TV show Singalong
Jubilee, where she met her future husband, Bill Langstroth, whom she
marred in 1975. She became a regular on CBC-TV's Let's Go in Halifax and
later returned to Singalong Jubilee. |
